The bay side holds two public oyster roasts in eight days this November. One is on Sunday, Nov. 1, just off Lynnhaven Drive. The other is on Sunday, Nov. 8, in a neighborhood park in Cape Story. Ticket prices for the second one go up on Nov. 1, so the first decision of the season comes before the first oyster is steamed.
After the roast comes the shell pile. Shore Drive is one of the few places where that pile has a short, marked route into local reef work. Lynnhaven River NOW's Save Oyster Shell program has drop sites and participating restaurants along the corridor. So a bushel from a Cape Story roast or a backyard roast in Ocean Park doesn't have to go in the trash.

| Thu., Dec. 3 | Chesapeake Beach Civic League Holiday Party | Location TBD | 6 to 8 p.m. | Not listed |
The roasts sit right in the middle of the month. Nearly everything else on the list is a neighborhood gathering, a market or a volunteer morning, and none of those keeps the same weekly hours a restaurant does.
The Navy League Hampton Roads event is the newcomer. The council's own listing opens with "Something new is coming to Navy League Hampton Roads this fall." It promises fresh oysters, BBQ, live music and more from noon to 4 p.m. at Ballyhoos, 2865 Lynnhaven Dr.
Ballyhoos sits a little south of the Shore Drive corridor. From Chic's Beach or Lynnhaven Colony it's a short drive. The listing doesn't publish a ticket price, so check the event page before you go.
Cape Story by the Sea's roast is the neighborhood-run one, and its details are the most complete. The civic league's event page lists the 2026 roast for Sunday, Nov. 8, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Cape Story Park, 2235 Bayberry St.
Online tickets are $50 and go up to $60 on Nov. 1. Children 15 and under get in free with a paid adult. Tickets are also sold at the door for $60. Cards are preferred, but cash is accepted.
For anyone reading this on Thursday, Oct. 29, the $50 price lasts through Saturday, Oct. 31. A couple who buys by then saves $20 over paying at the gate. A family of four with two kids 15 or under pays the same as that couple, since the kids are free.
The ticket covers all-you-can-eat local steamed oysters and all-you-can-drink beer and wine for guests 21 and older. It also covers local BBQ, burgers, hot dogs and sides. The page asks drinkers to bring an ID.
Nov. 8 works as a whole day on the bay side. TASTE's events page lists the Chic's Beach Market at TASTE Bayville Farms, 4097 Shore Dr., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 8. It features local artisans and vintage vendors. The page prints "Nov 8" with no year, so check it before heading out. Its October date matched a market held at the same address on Oct. 11, 2026.
If Nov. 8 holds, the market closes at 2 p.m., an hour after the Cape Story gates open at 1. So the morning goes to the market and the afternoon to the oysters, with Shore Drive connecting the two.
Saturday mornings have their own fixed stop. The Shore Drive Farmers Market at 2945 Shore Dr. runs from 9 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. Visit Virginia Beach's listing describes local produce, seafood, artisans and Lynnhaven Coffee Company.
Every roast ends with the same leftover. Lynnhaven River NOW started its Save Oyster Shell program in 2008, and it now runs as a partnership with the City of Virginia Beach. The goal is to collect shell from home meals, parties and restaurants for future reef projects.
The volumes add up. In 2018 the program collected 2,700 bushels. In 2020 it collected almost 9,000, the most on record for the program. LRNow's program page says that is enough to build an acre of reef.
Two details on the page matter most to anyone hosting their own roast:
There are four public drop sites citywide. Holland Road, the Virginia Aquarium and Welton's Seafood Market on Laskin Road are off the corridor. The one on the bay side is the Brock Environmental Center at 3663 Marlin Bay Dr.
The two organizations describe the Brock station a little differently. LRNow places the drop at the front of the parking lot, at the intersection of Chesterfield Street and East Stratford Street. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation's shell page calls it the Anne Shumadine Shell Recycling Station. It says the station is on the left before the dumpsters and asks that shells go into the bushel baskets there.
CBF's hours are what matter for the Sunday after a roast. The gates allow drive-up access from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. At other times, you can reach the station on foot by the walking path.
Shells from a restaurant meal can join the same collection. LRNow's program page lists three participating restaurants on Shore Drive and one just off it:
Those names come from LRNow's own list, and the collection figures on that page run through 2020. Asking the server when you order is the quickest way to confirm a restaurant still takes part.
Menus along the corridor rarely say where their oysters come from. Dockside's 2026 site says it is open seven days and serves raw oysters, without naming a source. Chick's Oyster Bar, at 2143 Vista Circle, lists half-shell oysters from a rotating East Coast selection.
Pleasure House Oysters, on the Lynnhaven, runs farm tours. Its tour page lists three options: Chef's Table, Tasting and Waterman. It asks guests to call Captain Chris Ludford at 757-663-6970 to schedule. Visit Virginia Beach's Lynnhaven oyster feature from February 2025 says the farm's oysters can be tasted on those tours. It names Terrapin, Commune and Zoe's Steak & Seafood as restaurants the farm supplied at the time.
The shell bins and the volunteer morning on Nov. 7 are at the same building. Lynnhaven River NOW's Volunteer Appreciation Party runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. that Saturday at Brock Environmental Center, with registration linked on the event page. The organization's volunteer page lists oyster spat collection and reef restoration among the ongoing ways to help.
On weeknights, Barbeque by Froggies at 3656 Shore Dr. runs a Tuesday jazz night from 7 to 10 p.m. and a Wednesday blues night from 8 to 11 p.m., according to Visit Virginia Beach. Call ahead to confirm the lineup.
The season wraps up on Dec. 3 with the Chesapeake Beach Civic League Holiday Party, 6 to 8 p.m. The location is still listed as TBD.
